Caring for Israel's Elderly

There are more than 200,000 Holocaust survivors in Israel today, a third of which live below the poverty line. While some battle severe medical conditions, others suffer from depression, sleep disorders, loneliness, emotional trauma and psychological distress. Joining hands with local volunteers and activists,JIJ cares for Israel’s elderly by providing thousands of fleece winter coats, hats and down comforters for the winter season. The distribution has been held for three consecutive years. JIJ's have now secured monthly donations to cover medical treatment for Holocaust survivors with terminal cancer.

Inclusion in Israel Society

AFFI has partnered with an innovative program in Israel that is helping young adults with intellectual challenges serve in the IDF. AKIM’s "Equal in Uniform", has so far placed 48 intellectually disabled Israeli young people in full service in the Army, working alongside other Israeli soldiers. This program also helps reduce negative stereotypes by giving soldiers a chance to interact with and get to know differently abled soldiers one on one. The intellectually challenged soldiers likewise have an opportunity to see themselves as a valued and contributing part of the Israeli army.
